The Breadcrumb Principle: How Big Is The Little Thing That God Is Asking You To Do?
Sometimes God tells us to do a little thing and we don’t realize it is the key to the big thing we have been asking Him for.
Many years ago, I was obsessively playing candy crush Eventually, I found myself playing every single moment even though I felt nudges in my heart urging me to stop so that I could do something more productive.
I felt the nudges so often that eventually I relented and followed God’s lead by making a list of things that would be productive and I did them. One thing led to another and before I knew it I had a brand new thriving business out of nowhere simply because God gave me an idea and I followed. It was an idea I would not have had if I had not followed God’s leading in my heart and stopped playing the game. When He instructed me to stop He didn’t say what I might be missing out on if I chose not to follow. I just had to follow. I call this the Breadcrumb Principle. God leads me one crumb at a time. After I do the first thing, He tells me the second thing. If I don’t do the first thing, He never tells me the second thing. It might be nothing. It might be SOMETHING.
What are you asking God for? What is He speaking to your heart to do? Are you asking for healing but not listening to his instructions to eat better? Or are you asking Him to help with controlling your spending but not listening when He says to stay out of the stores or to put down sales ads?
Choose Life
God has a good plan for each one of us and falling off the path from reaching that plan can be as simple as too many games of Candy Crush. Following satan doesn’t have to be a drunken orgy. It can be as simple as eating an apple. It can be anything other than what God is telling you to do. The devil doesn’t care what you do, as long as you don’t follow God. because the devil knows, if we follow God we will have life and that more abundantly. As a result, the adversary who comes to kill, steal and destroy, will do everything that he can to hinder you from following God by leading us to follow him. One path takes us to our destination, the other will take us away.
To walk in God’s promises for life and that more abundantly we must follow God to the exclusion of all else. We cannot be on two paths at once. The enemy’s plan for our lives is destruction and he will do his best to get us onto any other path because he knows if he can keep us there it will destroy God’s plan for our lives. God says that ‘Wide is the path that leads to destruction because there are so many options to distract us from what God is leading us to do.
If God is saying to me to write a book, the adversary will try to get me to do anything else, even something nice and kind (like making soup for a sick friend), to keep me from doing the ONE thing God instructed me to do. The devil knows that it doesn’t matter what we do, as long as we are not doing the ONE THING that God is leading us to do.
God Knows What Will Work And What Will Not
It’s hard to believe that God is intimately aware of every detail of our lives, down to the very hairs on our heads, but He is. He knows if we will end up with heart disease from the food that we eat. He knows if the surgery will work or not. He holds the answers to prayers and we will have those answers if listen, believe, and follow.
If we want to take the city we have to follow His instructions to walk around it seven times. (Joshua 6). If we want to win a battle with 300 men we have to give a battle cry. (Judges 7) If we want to be healed we have to get up and walk. If we want to catch the fish, we have to throw our nets over to the other side. If we want what we ask, we have to seek God and follow His instructions.
One day, one of my followers on Facebook., Rebecca Potou, messaged me and asked me to pray with her that her upcoming surgery would be successful. She explained that she had an abscess in her hand that wouldn’t heal despite several different treatments.
I knew that the surgery wasn’t going to work and that she needed to take garlic so I shared the message that she needed to take garlic.
Rebecca went ahead with the surgery but, more than a week after having the infection removed surgically and taking antibiotics for the infection, the infection persisted. When the fever remained unchanged Rebecca called the doctor in tears and asked for stronger antibiotics.
At first, the doctor thought she was overreacting but once they saw a large amount of swelling and pus growing in her hand they quickly agreed to change her antibiotics to the strongest available. But, even those did not work. After taking them for two days, nothing had changed.
Out of desperation, she remembered our conversation and she took the garlic.
This is what she says happened:
Hello Mia.
Thank you so much for the garlic tips, the fever is going down so well. I know this was a holy spirit move. Seriously. I was taking the best antibiotics, but my fever and infection didn’t go until the first garlic clove!!!!
Seriously. The first clove of garlic I swallowed I stopped getting disgusting pus from the wound. I’m crying.
The doctors thought I was overreacting, then they see puss and they changed antibiotics for stronger ones (and those didn’t help, after two days no change in the discharge or fever) but as soon as I took the garlic the fever broke and the puss stopped!
Thank you. Love Rebecca xoxo
When God says, “Take Garlic,” It is because He already knows that surgery and medicine will not work.
But wait, there’s more.
When I asked how she was feeling, Rebecca mentioned that the fever never returned again after the first clove of garlic, but that she was still fatigued.
So, I prayed as the Lord led me to pray:
Lord, I pray that Rebecca eats lots of fresh food to restore her energy. I pray for a broth full of goodness to restore her and I ask for complete restoration in Jesus’ Name.
She replied saying, I’m amazed because I had the same thought! Before you prayed, I thought, I need a nutritious bone broth, but I need an oven and mine has been broken for months. My landlord has not even been out to check it.
It was apparent that bone broth was the rest of her divine prescription so we prayed for God’s help because if God ordered the bone broth, He would make a way.
Rebecca, the thoughts that you had to make bone broth are what God sounds like in our hearts. He just keeps bringing the same thought to your heart until you do whatever He is saying to do. Follow your heart, especially when the thoughts come back to you over and over, because it’s God leading you.
“Wow. So true. WOW!!!!! Cause I said, It is just me. Goosebumps. My god, my life. I was reading this and it hit me, I’m on the right path! Mia. Thank you! AMEN! AMEN! EMMANUEL!’, She replied
A short time later, Rebecca messaged me back and she was ecstatic. She said, “Just after you made that prayer, one hour later! My landlord called and said it’s being fixed. I sometimes forget how amazing God is and has always been. Thank you, Mia. You are a catalyst in his Kingdom!” I’ve included a picture of the bone broth on my stove! Thank you, Mia!!
Until she followed God, Rebecca was afraid that nothing was going to work and the infection could threaten her life, but when she followed His instructions, her prayers were answered and He supplied all her needs.
All Glory to God who sent the instructions and made it happen.
Learning to hear from God in our hearts so that we can follow to good health.
Understanding the New Covenant promise of Jeremiah 31 is critical to knowing and following God. God wants to lead each of us individually and specifically. He wants us to know Him well enough to hear from Him through our hearts in order to maintain good health and well-being.
When I first began to hear from God, He did not show up with a sign explaining that the things in my spirit were from Him. I learned through trial and error, most of which happened by seeking and paying very close attention to what was going on inside of me. Sometimes it was easy to notice that God was communicating with me but other times it was not so obvious and it was easy to miss.
For God speaks in one way and in another, yet no one notices. (Job 33:14 BSB)
God speaks in many ways and, exactly like learning a spoken language, learning to hear from His “still small voice” takes practice,
As the above verse illustrates, God speaks in more than one way and people often miss communications from God because we don’t understand how He communicates. We expect Him to speak to us within the limited forms of communication that we mere humans possess, which means mainly with words and face to face, but God is a Spirit who lives on the inside of us and as such He communicates mostly through spiritual channels from the inside of us. He speaks to our hearts with inspired thoughts, He sends dreams or visions, He speaks through epiphanies or revelations, He speaks clearly with words from the inside of us, He speaks loudly and clearly, He speaks through angels and prophets, and He sends signs.
An important part of Rebecca’s story is that she heard from God but she thought that the thoughts inside of her were her own thoughts. When she had the thought to take bone broth to help restore her strength she had no idea that God inspires us through thoughts. And she is not alone. Most of us have no idea that one of the most common ways that God inspires us is through thoughts that flow out of our hearts.
The Promises Of God For Those Who Follow Him
Dueteronomy 287 The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.
8 The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.
9 The LORD will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the LORD your God and walk in his ways.
10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will fear you.
11 The LORD will grant you abundant prosperity–in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground–in the land he swore to your forefathers to give you.
12 The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.
13 The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.
God’s plan is that we know Him and follow His instructions from the inside of us. By following those instructions, we have the blessings listed above. Mankind is free to choose which path they want take in life, but part of the choice is living with the consequences of our choices. God said, I have set before you live and death, choose life. Living or dying is often the result of a making a good or bad choice.
For example, sometimes God leads us to healthier habits because if we eat poorly, we will probably be sick and die early. If we don’t take care of ourselves and follow a healthy lifestyle, our well-being will suffer. When our heart tells us to lose weight or to stop eating the things that have destroyed our health, not following those prompts will mean bad outcomes. Sometimes people pray for a miracle but don’t receive one because our problems are not broken bodies but broken habits. Broken habits don’t need healing, instead they need “following.”
Overeating, sugar, salt, processed foods, not enough water, and lack of exercise, are all things that can knock our health out of whack. Imagine hitting ourselves in the head with a hammer over and over and then asking God to heal our heads.
God would say, Your problem isn’t something that needs healing. You mostly just need to stop hitting yourself with a hammer.
This is also true of habits that affect our health. Sometimes we don’t need healing. Instead, we need to follow the nudge in our hearts to stop eating so much sugar. When God says to our hearts, “Stop eating so much sugar,’ the only answer to our health crisis is to stop eating so much sugar.
When we overeat, it hurts our health. When we indulge in too much salt, we run risks of problems. When we hurt ourselves with bad habits, we don’t need divine healing. We need to follow God’s instructions. Faith isn’t “believing” the problem away. Faith is believing in God’s answer and following.
One day a Facebook follower, Priscilla sent me a message saying:
Hi, Mia. I have a prayer request. Please pray for me that my high blood pressure goes away completely. I am worried right now.
So, I prayed as God led, Father, help your daughter to do what you have been speaking to her heart to do for her health. We pray that your voice would be heard and that you continue to speak the things to her that she knows that she has to do. Confirm the thoughts that you have put into her heart so that she can hear clearly to follow your lead. Please help her to hear from you so that you can lead her into every good thing that you have prepared for her life. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
When Priscilla asked me to pray, God revealed to me that He had been telling her to eat better and exercise. But it was the third time in a row that someone had asked me to pray, and the message in my spirit was, “Eat better and exercise.” But I had never heard God say the same thing three times in a row, usually His instructions are as varied as the people, so I felt like my ‘knower’ was broken, and I struggled with believing that the message was from God, so I hesitated. But then, He revealed specific details and led me to confirm them through Priscilla.
So, I messaged Priscilla again:
Hi, Priscilla. Yesterday, I felt that God had been telling you what to do about your health (diet and exercise), and today He told me that He has been telling you the same thing for a year and to ask you to confirm it.
She replied, “Yes, for a year now. A thought of living a healthy life style has crossed my mind. Thoughts like, I should lose weight and be more active. I have been trying to do all these things but its not working out, and I still get these thoughts. So, yes, the word was accurate.”
“The best part is that you are hearing from God,” I replied.
“I am hearing from God!? Wow! I thought it was just my thoughts.“
